Position Week brought us exactly what we wanted: 1v2, Sandy Cheeks vs. Big Dig Energy, with the championship coming down to a best of three. And there was already some history here. Just one week earlier, on September 22, Big Dig Energy had beaten Sandy Cheeks 2–1, so Sandy came into the final with a very recent loss to the exact team standing between them and the title.
The first game could not have gone much better for Sandy. They came out firing and took Game 1 21–12, putting themselves firmly in control and sending a pretty clear message that the previous week's loss wasn't going to define this matchup. Big Dig Energy wasn't going to go quietly, though. They answered in Game 2, grinding out a 21–19 win. It was a completely different game from the opener, and suddenly the championship was tied 1–1, with everything coming down to the final game.
And then Sandy Cheeks closed the door. They took Game 3 21–14, winning the deciding game by seven points and securing the 2–1 championship victory. After splitting the first two games, Sandy didn't leave the outcome to chance; they came out and controlled the final game to finish the season on top.
What makes the ending particularly satisfying is the symmetry with the previous week. On September 22, Big Dig Energy beat Sandy 2–1. Seven days later, Sandy returned the favor with another 2–1 result, except this time it happened on the biggest night of the season. Sandy lost the middle game again, but unlike the previous meeting, they were the team that won Games 1 and 3 when it mattered most.
And looking at the entire schedule, Sandy's championship really feels like the culmination of a season long battle among the four teams. They opened the season with a loss to The A Team, then turned around and beat Big Dig Energy, Dingus VC, and The A Team during the following weeks. They had another close battle with Dingus VC, took some lumps against Big Dig Energy, and then finally got the rematch they needed in Position Week. The season ended with Sandy Cheeks beating Big Dig Energy 21–12, 19–21, 21–14 to claim the 1v2 matchup.
So there it is: Sandy Cheeks, Position Week champions. 🏆 They took the hardest possible route to the finish, got a rematch against the team that had just beaten them, dropped a tight second game, and then came back to win the deciding game 21–14.
