Spring Kickball Champions 2010

XOSO's spring kickball season had to end sooner or later, and yesterday it finally did.

Four teams reached the playoffs this season: The undefeated "Just the Tip", "Ball Busters", "Drunk Again and Looking to Score", and "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond".

Unfortunately for a few teams, yesterday also wrapped up the US OPEN, and more than one key player was absent from their team's playoff run because they were watching Tiger on the links.

In the first game of the day, "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" hoped to redeem two regular season losses against the #1 seed and undefeated, "Just the Tip". "Just the Tip" was missing two of their best players (US OPEN), but "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" was without two of their own, who were also at the tournament.

"My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" had 2 girls at the start, and "Just the Tip" debated electing to kick first to earn a free run before a third girl showed up for "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond". Instead, they opted to be the home team and to field first. The first two innings were all defense before "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" scored two runs in the top of the 3rd. "Just the Tip" answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, then scored two more to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning. Unfortunately for them, "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" answered back in the top of the 6th with two runs to take the lead, 4-3. "Just the Tip" got their first kicker on, but then got three consecutive outs to strand the runner and lose the game.

In the 2nd game, the "Ball Busters" played with only 6 players against "Drunk Again and Looking to Score". The "Ball Busters" only had two women, so they started one run behind, but quickly made up for it with a 5 run first inning. "Drunk Again and Looking to Score" answered with a couple runs of their own and we had the makings of a shootout. "Ball Busters added 3 runs in the third, and the teams traded a few runs over the next 2.5 innings to head into the 6th and final inning with the score 9-5 in favor of the "Ball Busters". With the bases loaded in the top of the inning, the "Ball Busters" got a grand slam that dashed the title hopes of "Drunk Again and Looking to Score" and went on to win it 13-5.

The championship game looked to be a good one, with "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" winning with defense in the first game, and the "Ball Busters" winning with offense in the second. Which team would give in?

After winning with just 6 players (a 7th joined later), the "Ball Busters" didn't have the juice to keep up the power display they had in their first game and "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" seemed to find all the holes in the shorthanded "Ball Busters" defense. "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" racked up runs in three innings and the "Ball Busters" couldn't drive their runners in when they got on base. "My Balls Want to Come in Your Diamond" won, 14-1.
